WKGO

WKGO is an FM radio station at 106.1 mHz, serving the greater Cumberland, Maryland area. As "GO 106", it played the latest top 40 hits throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Starting in the mid-'90s the format began to evolve, first to a roughly 50-50 mix of hot adult contemporary and classic hits, then gradually moving more "classic rock" by the year 2000. Radio Station WFWM is a public broadcast radio station headquartered at Frostburg State University in the Stangle Building. WFWM provides 24 hours of cultural and educational programming to the western most area of Maryland and adjacent areas of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. WFWM's main transmitter is located on Dans Mountain in Midland, Maryland and operates at a frequency of 91.9 MHz. A secondary transmitter is located in Oakland, Maryland and operates at a frequency of 96.3 MHz.

Georges Creek

Georges Creek is a 17.6-mile-long tributary stream of the North Branch Potomac River in western Maryland. The creek has its headwaters near Frostburg and empties into the North Branch Potomac River at Westernport, all in western Allegany County. Along the Georges Creek Valley, there exists a series of small towns founded in the nineteenth century for miners' homes. The Georges Creek Valley is rich in wide veins of coal, once extracted by deep mines but still mined today through surface mining.
