Tate County is a county located in the northwestern portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi, east of the Mississippi Delta. As of 2010, the population was 28,886. Its county seat is Senatobia. Actor James Earl Jones was born in Arkabutla, Tate County. The county is named for one of the first prominent settlers of the area, Thomas Simpson Tate. Tate County is part of the Memphis, TN–MS–AR Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hernando is the county seat of DeSoto County, the second-most-populous county in the Memphis metropolitan area. U.S. Route 51 and the I-55 freeway traverse the entire city from north to south. Hernando's historic downtown square, which surrounds the county courthouse, sits at the intersection of Commerce St. and US-51.

By 2010, the county had grown to a population of 161,252, largely due to migration from Memphis, Tn causing African American growth of over 150%. Also, migration has increased into the area from the North and Midwest because of job growth.
