Dale, Oregon

Dale is an unincorporated community in Grant County, Oregon, United States. It is located on U.S. Route 395 within the Umatilla National Forest about 17 miles south of Ukiah. It is near the Umatilla-Grant County border just south of the 45th parallel north. The first post office at this locale was established in 1887 and named Dorman after James W. Dorman, the first postmaster. The name was changed to Dale in 1891.

Ritter, Oregon

Ritter is an unincorporated community in Grant County, Oregon, United States, ten miles down the Middle Fork John Day River from U.S. Route 395, between Dale and Long Creek. At one time the locale was also known as Ritter Hot Springs. When a post office was established in this locale, it was named for the Rev. Joseph Ritter, a pioneer Baptist minister of the John Day Valley, on whose ranch it was situated.

Heppner National Forest

Heppner National Forest was established as the Heppner Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon on July 18, 1906 with 292,176 acres . It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with part of Blue Mountains National Forest to establish Umatilla National Forest and the name was discontinued.
