1949 Olympia earthquake

The 1949 Olympia earthquake occurred on April 13, 1949 at 19:55 UTC, and is the largest recorded earthquake to occur in the Puget Sound region of Washington, with a magnitude of 7.1. The epicenter was in the area between Olympia and Tacoma, and was felt throughout the state of Washington, as well as parts of Oregon, British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana.

2001 Nisqually earthquake

The Nisqually earthquake was an intraslab earthquake, occurring at 10:54 am PST on February 28, 2001. One of the largest recorded earthquakes in Washington state history, it measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasted approximately 45 seconds. The epicenter of the earthquake was Anderson Island, about 17 km northeast of Olympia. The focus was at a depth of 52 km .

Anderson Island (Washington)

Anderson Island is the southernmost island in Puget Sound and is part of Pierce County, Washington, United States. It is accessible by boat or a 20 minute ferry ride from Steilacoom. Anderson Island lies just south of McNeil Island. To the northwest Key Peninsula lies across Drayton Passage. The south basin of Puget Sound separates the island from the mainland to the southeast, while to the southwest the Nisqually Reach of Puget Sound separates the island from the mainland.
