Whitesville is a town and former coal town in Boone County, West Virginia, United States, along the Big Coal River. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Whitesville was incorporated on August 15, 1935 by the Boone County Circuit Court. It is named for B. W. White, a prominent early settler in the area. Whitesville was formerly known as Jarrold's Valley and Pritchard City.

Memorial Tunnel

The Memorial Tunnel is a 2,802 feet two-lane vehicular tunnel that formerly carried the West Virginia Turnpike through/under Paint Creek Mountain in Standard, West Virginia in Kanawha County. Closed to interstate traffic since 1987, the tunnel serves as the Center for National Response for military first responders to train for various situations that may arise in such a location without alarming the general public.

Center for National Response

The Center for National Response is a 2,802 feet two-lane vehicular tunnel opened November 8, 1954 as part of the West Virginia Turnpike. Originally known as Memorial Tunnel, the tunnel formerly carried West Virginia Turnpike through/under Paint Creek Mountain in Standard, West Virginia in Kanawha County. Its construction required the movement of 91,000 cubic yards of earth, and was the first tunnel in the nation to have closed-circuit television monitoring. at a final cost of $5 million.

Upper Big Branch Mine disaster

The Upper Big Branch Mine disaster occurred on April 5, 2010 roughly 1,000 feet underground in Raleigh County, West Virginia at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch coal mine located in Montcoal. Twenty-nine out of thirty-one miners at the site were killed. The explosion occurred at 3:27 pm. The accident was the worst in the United States since 1970, when 38 miners were killed at Finley Coal Company's No. 15 and 16 mines in Hyden, Kentucky.
