In Gran Colombia it belonged to the Orinoco Department which was created in 1824. With the creation of the States of Venezuela in 1864 it became Nueva Esparta. La Asunción was founded in 1565 by Captain Pedro Cervantes de Albornoz and has a current population of approx 28,500 inhabitants. It is situated in a fertile valley surrounded by green hills, right in the center of eastern Margarita, where a fresher climate exist.
