The Residency, Alice Springs

The Residency holds significance for the people of Alice Springs as a tangible symbol of their brief legislative independence from the rest of the Northern Territory. It also provided a hub of social and cultural activities for the local residents. John Charles Cawood was appointed Government Resident of Central Australia in 1926 and was to be based at the capital, Stuart (as Alice Springs was formerly known). The Residency was one of a type of house designed for an arid climate.

Town of Alice Springs

The Town of Alice Springs is a Local Government Area in the Northern Territory. On 1 July 1971, Alice Springs was gazetted as a Municipality with the town council elected on 25 July 1971. It is situated 1,498 kilometres south of the Darwin. The council governs an area of 410.0 square kilometres and has a population of 23,893 as of the 2006 census.
