Mount Maroon

Mount Maroon is a mountain in South East Queensland that is part of the McPherson Range. The mountain rises to 966 m above sea level about 12 km west of Rathdowney. The original indigenous name for the mountain was Wahlmoorum which meant sand goanna in the Yuggera language. The current name for the mountain comes from the first grazing property in the area called Maroon. Mount Maroon consists mainly of rhyolite and has its geological origins in the cooling of molten rock beneath the surface.

Maroon Dam

Maroon Dam is a water storage and recreational dam in South East Queensland. The dam lies 25 km south of Boonah, within the Scenic Rim at the foot of the McPherson Range. Maroon Dam subverts the waters of Burnett Creek, a tributary of Logan River and supplies the Scenic Rim Regional Council with water. Some water is supplied to irrigators along the Logan River. Construction of the dam occurred between 1969 to 1974.

Mount Barney National Park

Mount Barney National Park is a national park in Queensland, 90 km southwest of Brisbane. It amalgamated the adjacent Mount Lindesay National Park in 1980. It is part of the Scenic Rim Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance in the conservation of several species of threatened birds.

Rathdowney, Queensland

Rathdowney is a small town in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. It is on the Mount Lindesay Highway 32 km south of Beaudesert at the base of the McPherson Range. It is located in the Scenic Rim local government area. At the 2006 census, Rathdowney had a population of 198. The town was named after Rathdowney, Ireland. The Beaudesert Shire Tramway was extended to Rathdowney in 1911 but closed in 1944. Timber clearing was the first major industry in the area.

Palen Creek Correctional Centre

Palen Creek Correctional Centre is situated about 100 km south west of Brisbane in the rural community of Rathdowney. HM Prison Palen Creek was established in 1934. This was the first prison in the Commonwealth to have absolutely no security measures except the honour of prisoners selected to go there. Prisoners erected their own buildings (they lived in tents originally) and sold produce from prisoner maintained market gardens.
