Melrose, South Australia

Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. It is in the shadow of Mount Remarkable, 265 km north of Adelaide, and the town was once named "Mount Remarkable". At the 2006 census, Melrose had a population of 431. The first European explorer in the area was Edward John Eyre in 1840, closely followed by settlers coming to farm the area. Copper was discovered and mining started in 1846, but it was not economic, and ceased in 1851.

Tarcowie, South Australia

Tarcowie (postcode 5431) is a town in South Australia. Tarcowie is an aboriginal word meaning torrential waters. It was named by Governor Musgrave on 20 May 1875. At the 2006 census, Tarcowie had a population of 215. The dominate industry in Tarcowie is sheep farming, however in recent times wind farming may be taking over as the main industry for the town.

Wirrabara, South Australia

Wirrabara is a settlement in South Australia. At the 2006 census, Wirrabara had a population of 251. Wirrabara is located in the Southern Flinders Ranges in the mid-north of South Australia, along the Rocky River. A timber milling industry was established in Wirrabara during the early 1850s. In 1877 the first government forest nursery in Australia was planted in the nearby Wirrabara forest.

Pekina

Pekina is a town in the Mid North region of South Australia. The town is located in the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton local government area, 270 kilometres north of the state capital, Adelaide. At the 2006 census, Pekina and the surrounding area had a population of 172. The name of the town is thought to derive from the Aboriginal word for "creek water". European settlement in the Pekina district began in earnest in 1846 when Price Maurice brought 3000 sheep to the district.
