Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in south-central Belize established to protect the forests, fauna and watersheds of an approximately 400 square kilometre area of the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains. The reserve was founded in 1990 as the first wilderness sanctuary for the jaguar and is regarded by one author as the premier site for jaguar preservation in the world.

Victoria Peak (Belize)

Victoria Peak within the Maya Mountains is the second highest mountain in Belize. The highest peak in the country, Doyle's Delight at a height of 1,124 metres, is located 57 kilometres southwest of Victoria Peak. Victoria Peak is situated in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The first exploration of the ascent occurred in British expeditions of 1888 and 1889, but the explorers actually scaled a nearby peak that they mistakenly labelled Victoria Peak.

Stann Creek District

Stann Creek District is a district in the south east region of Belize. According to the 2010 census, the district had a population of 32,166 people. Its capital is the city of Dangriga, formerly known as "Stann Creek Town. " Stann comes from "stanns," or safe havens used by colonialists coming from the "old world" to the "new world."

Big Creek, Belize

Big Creek or Cala Grande is a sea port facility in Belize. Big Creek is a deep-water port on the Caribbean Sea in Belize's Toledo District (just south of the boundary with Stann Creek District), constructed in the 1990s. It is the nation's second most important port, after Belize City. Big Creek is the main port for Belize's banana industry; citrus fruit and shrimp are also exported from here. It is also the location from which oil, extracted from the fields of Spanish Lookout, is exported.
