Illiniza

The Illinizas are a pair of volcanic mountains that are located to the south of Quito. They are found in the ecological reserve that shares its name with the mountains. These twin mountains are separated in the middle by a saddle that is about a kilometer long. The peaks are among the highest in Ecuador, with Illiniza Sur standing slightly taller than Illiniza Norte, its northern counterpart, at 5248 metres and 5126 metres respectively.

2008 Conviasa Boeing 737 crash

A Conviasa Boeing 737-291 Advanced ferry flight from Maiquetia, Venezuela to Latacunga, Ecuador crashed into Illiniza Volcano. The aircraft had been stored at Caracas and was being ferried to a new owner. There were 3 crew on board, none of whom survived.

Pastaza River

The Pastaza (formerly known as the Sumatara) is a large tributary to the Marañón River in the northwestern Amazon Basin of South America. It has its headwaters in the Ecuadorian province of Cotapaxi, flowing off of the northwestern slopes of the volcano Cotopaxi and known as the Patate River. The Patate flows south and in Tungurahua Province it is joined by the Chambo River just upstream from the town of Baños de Agua Santa just north of the volcano Mount Tungurahua and becomes the Pastaza.

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, located about 28 km south of Quito, Ecuador, South America. It is the second highest summit in the country, reaching a height of 5,897 m Cotopaxi has an almost symmetrical cone that rises from a highland plain of about 3,800 metres (12,500 ft), with a width at its base of about 23 kilometres (14 mi). It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, which starts at the height of 5,000 metres (16,400 ft).

Sangolquí

Sangolquí is the seat of the Rumiñahui canton in the province of Pichincha in northern Ecuador. Access to the city of Quito through the village of Tumbaco or through the "Autopista General Rumiñahui" (General Rumiñahui Highway).
