Cuscatlán Department

Cuscatlán is a department of El Salvador, located in the center of the country. With a surface area of 756.19 square kilometres, it is El Salvador's smallest department. It is inhabited by over 200,000 people. Cuscatlán or Cuzcatlán was the name the original inhabitants of the Western part of the country gave to most of the territory that is now El Salvador. In their language it means "land of precious jewels". It was created on 22 May 1835.

1986 San Salvador earthquake

The 1986 San Salvador Earthquake struck El Salvador on October 10, 1986 at 17:49:24 UTC, causing considerable damage to the capital city, San Salvador, and surrounding areas, including neighbouring Honduras and Guatemala. Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are believed to have been killed, and over 10,000 people were injured. 200,000 people were left homeless after the earthquake and a week of minor aftershocks.

Lake Ilopango

Lake Ilopango is a crater lake which fills a scenic 8×11 km (72 km or 28 sq mi) volcanic caldera in central El Salvador, on the borders of the San Salvador, La Paz, and Cuscatlán departments. The caldera, which contains the second largest lake in the country and is located immediately east of the capital city, San Salvador, has a scalloped 100 m to 500 m high rim.
