Museum of the Great War

The Museum of the Great War (French: Historial de la Grande Guerre) is in Péronne, France, near the heart of the World War I Somme battlefields. (There is another museum with a very similar English name near Paris. ) The museum looks mostly at the Great War, and the years just before and just after. It strives to place war in a social context, stressing "the common suffering of the combatants" and "the civilians, who were equally mobilised by the war effort".

Mont Saint-Quentin

Mont Saint-Quentin overlooks the Somme River in the region of Picardie approximately 1.5 kilometers north of the town of Péronne, Somme, France. The hill is about 100 meters high but as it is situated in a bend of the river it dominates the whole position and is of strategic significance. During World War I, it was a key to the German defence of the Somme line and was the last German stronghold.

Mont Saint-Quentin Australian war memorial

Mont Saint-Quentin Australian war memorial, located in Mont Saint-Quentin region of Picardy, is an Australian First World War memorial. The Australian Second Division has a war memorial on the road from Bapaume to Péronne. It is the only one of the five Australian division memorials initiated by members of the division. The base was erected in 1925. It has bronze bas-reliefs by May Butler-George of men hauling and pushing a gun and of men advancing with bayoneted rifles and hand-grenades.

2nd Division (Australia)

The 2nd Division commands all the reserve brigades in Australia. These are the 4th in Victoria, the 5th and 8th in New South Wales, the 9th in South Australia and Tasmania, the 11th in Queensland and the 13th in Western Australia. The division was first formed in 1915 as part of the First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF), and served in the Gallipoli Campaign and on the Western Front World War I. Apart from a period from 1960 to 1965, the division has existed in one form or another.
