Château de Taillebourg

The Château de Taillebourg is a ruined castle from the medieval era. It is built on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the village of Taillebourg and the valley of the Charente River, in the Charente-Maritime department of France. It commanded a very strategic position and was therefore the focus of much conflict throughout the medieval era. It featured in several episodes of the Hundred Years' War and the Saintonge War before that.

Church of Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay

The Church of Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay is an important Medieval church on the way to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, in Aulnay, Charente-Maritime. The Church is thought to have been built in 1120-1140. Numerous oriental influences can be seen in its designs. For example the first arc of the gate is inspired from Oriental designs. Designs of elephants also find their origin in Oriental designs. Numerous mouldings of the Church are visible at the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris.

Sainte-Marie-des-Dames

The Abbey of Sainte-Marie-des-Dames (French: Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes) was the first Benedictine abbey for women in Saintes in Charente-Maritime in France. It was founded in 1047 by Geoffrey II, Count of Anjou. One of its abbesses was Agnès de Barbezieux (1134-1174), whose relative, Eleanor of Aquitaine, was a generous donor to the abbey. Madame de Montespan was educated here. It is located next to the town's Arch of Germanicus and was classified a monument historique in 1948.
