The island was donated to the French government with the promise that a national park, the Port-Cros National Park, would be created on the island. This was established on December 14, 1963. The island is 4 km wide and its most elevated point is 199 meters. It is 650 hectares.

Fort de Brégançon
The fort de Brégançon is the official retreat for the President of France. The fort is built on a small abrupt island, off the Mediterranean coast which is connected by a short pier, on the French commune of Bormes-les-Mimosas in Var department. The fort has been a presidential residence since 1968, during Charles de Gaulle's presidency.
