St. Mary's Abbey, Fulda

St. Mary's Abbey is a Benedictine nunnery in Fulda, Hesse, Germany. It was founded in 1626. Its first decades were very troubled as a result of the Thirty Years' War: the sisters often had to flee from enemy troops and the abbey was looted several times. The nunnery was able to evade destruction during the secularisation of 1802 by turning itself into a girls' school. During the Kulturkampf, the sisters went into exile in France from 1875 to 1887.

University of Fulda

The University of Fulda, was founded in 1734 by Adolphus von Dalberg and existed until 1805. Most of the students and professors were Catholic. Under Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra Protestants were also admitted; from 1777, with the sole exception of the theological faculty, a Protestant could acquire a degree in any faculty of the university. During 71 years of its existence the university had about 4100 students.

Fulda monastery

The monastery of Fulda was a Benedictine abbey in Fulda, in the present-day German state of Hesse. It was founded in 12 March, 744 by Saint Sturm, a disciple of Saint Boniface, and became an eminent center of learning with a renowned scriptorium, and the predecessor of the Fulda diocese.

Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda

Nassau-Orange-Fulda was a short-lived principality of the Holy Roman Empire, which was created for the Prince of Orange and existed only from 1803 to 1806. In 1795 the William V, Prince of Orange-Nassau, lost all his possessions in the Low Countries because of the rise of the Batavian Republic, a client state of the French Republic.
