German submarine U-596

German submarine U-596 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for the Nazi German Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 4 January 1941 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg as 'werk' 572, launched on 17 September 1941 and commissioned on 13 November under Kapitänleutnant Gunther Jahn. He was replaced on 28 July 1943 by Oberleutnant Victor-Whilhelm Noon who was superseded by Oblt. Hans Kolbus in July 1944.

Salamis Bay

Salamis Bay is a bay in Greece that connects with the Saronic Gulf to the west. The total length is approximately 10 km long from north east to west and about 4 km wide from north to south. It begins from the northwesternmost tip down to Cape Petritis. Villages by the gulf include Aianteio (or Eantio). The mountains encircle the bay except for the open waters to the west. The road linking with places in the south of the island lie to the east and another further north.

Hellenic Navy

The Hellenic Navy (HN) (Greek: Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, Polemikó Naftikó, abbreviated ΠΝ) is the naval force of Greece, part of the Greek Armed Forces. The modern Greek navy has its roots in the naval forces of various Aegean Islands, which fought in the Greek War of Independence. During the periods of monarchy (1833–1924 and 1936–1973) it was known as the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ).

Hellenic Naval Academy

The Hellenic Naval Academy (Greek: Σχολή Ναυτικών Δοκίμων, lit. "School of Naval Cadets") is a military academy with university status and has the responsibility to educate and suitably train competent Naval Officers for the Hellenic Navy. Its full name is Hellenic Naval Cadets Academy and was founded in 1845. The academy is one of the oldest educational institutions in Greece. The academy educates Deck and Engineering Naval cadets.
