It has a population of about 400,000, primarily of European and African extractions. The population is ethnically "ladinos" or "mestizos" (i.e. not Indians)(mestizo) in its majority. Jutiapa is the only department in Guatemala whose official language is Spanish, with no indigenous inhabitants. The department is divided into seventeen municipalities.
