Marigaon district

Marigaon district is an administrative district in the state of Assam in India. The district headquarters are located at Marigaon. The district occupies an area of 1,550 km² and has a population of 957,853 (as of 2011) of which males and females are 485,328 and 472,525 respectively. The ancient place of occult Mayang is located in this district as well as Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nellie massacre

The Nellie massacre took place in Assam during a six-hour period in the morning of 18 February 1983. Some sources ascribe it to Lalung tribespeople, though these themselves deny involvement. There are, in fact, various versions on the background and perpetrators current, so that it is difficult to get at the facts, except that the massacre is to be seen in the context of the Assam agitation.
