Kumbharli Ghat

The Kumbharli Ghat is a mountain pass in Maharashtra, India cutting across the Western Ghats range. It connects the coastal Ratnagiri District Konkan region of Maharashtra with the Satara District Desh region on the Deccan plateau. It is one of few link roads between the Konkan and Ghatmaatha in Maharashtra. The road, a state highway, is at an average elevation of 625 m . It links the cities of Chiplun (Ratnagiri district) and Karad (Satara district). Near the eastern end is the Koyna Dam.

Koyna Hydroelectric Project

The Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed hydroelectric power plant of India. It is a complex project consisting of total four dams with the largest Dam built on Koyna River known as Koyna Dam hence the name Koyna Hydroelectric project. The project uses potential of water from Koyna River. The project site is situated in Satara district near Patan. The village Helwak near the dam was later known as Koynanagar. The total Installed capacity of the project is 1,960 MW.

1967 Koynanagar earthquake

1967 Koynanagar Earthquake occurred in and around Koynanagar town in Maharashtra, India. On 11 December the 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit near the site of Koyna dam. The earthquake claimed at least 180 human lives and injured over 1500 people. The earthquake also damaged more than 80% of the houses in Koyana Nagar Township. However it didn't cause any major damage to the dam except some cracks which were repaired afterwards.

Shivasagar lake
