Battle of Avarayr

The Battle of Avarayr also known as Battle of Vartanantz, was fought on May 26, 451 AD on the Avarayr Plain in Vaspurakan, between the Armenian Army under Saint Vartan and Sassanid Persia. Although the Persians were victorious on the battlefield itself, the battle proved to be a major strategic victory for Armenians, as Avarayr paved way to the Nvarsak Treaty (484 AD), which affirmed Armenia's right to practice Christianity freely.

Avarayr Plain

The Avarayr Plain is the location of the Battle of Avarayr in 451, and is described as being along the banks of the Ṭłmut River, apparently the Armeno-Persian frontier at that time. At the time, the Avarayr plain was part of the Armenian region of Vaspurakan. The plain is located today in northwestern Iran near the border with Nakhichevan.

Poldasht County

Poldasht county is a county (Shahrestan) in West Azarbaijan province in north-western Iran. Its capital is the city of Poldasht. At the 2006 census, the county's population was 38,586, in 8,758 families. The county is subdivided into two districts: the Central District and Aras District. The county has one city: Poldasht. The historical Church of Saint Stephanos, in the village of Dare Sham, in the Gechlart area of Poldasht, draws tourists and the faithful from Iran and around the world.
