Mahmuei

Mahmuei is a village in Shakhenât rural subdistrict, Central district of Birjand in South Khorasan Province, Iran. According to legend the first settlers named the village "Mahmûeî" because it was in on open and flat ground. The word Mahmuei is a derivation of the word Mahmah which according to Dehkhoda Dictionary means a flat plain. Official statistics for Mahmuei in 1996 estimated a population of 695 people (185 houses and 223 families).

2012 Zohan earthquake

The 2012 Zohan earthquake was a 5.6 Mw earthquake that occurred near the city of Zohan, Qayen and Birjand in South Khorasan Province, Iran, on December 5, 2012, at 20:38 Iran Standard Time. It struck 42 km ESE from Qayen and had a maximum perceived intensity of VI (Strong) on the Mercalli intensity scale. At least 8 people were killed and 23 people were injured.
