Geography of Italy

Italy is located in southern Europe and comprises the long, boot-shaped Italian Peninsula, the land between the peninsula and the Alps, and some islands including Sicily and Sardinia. Corsica, although belonging to the Italian geographical region, has been a part of France since 1769. Its total area is 301,230 km, of which 294,020 km is land and 7,210 km is water . It lies between latitudes 35° and 48° N, and longitudes 6° and 19° E.

Villa of Livia

The Villa of Livia, near Rome, was probably part of Livia Drusilla's dowry brought to the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Its Latin name, Ad Gallinas Albas referred to its breed of white chickens, but it was also famous for its laurel grove, which wassaid by Suetonius to have auspiciously omened origins . The Villa was built and modified in four stages, the earliest of Republican date, the latest of the time of Constantine the Great.

Prima Porta

Prima Porta is a suburb of Rome located 12 kilometres north of its center along the Via Flaminia and just a kilometre outside of the Grande Raccordo Anulare highway. It is located on the right bank of the Tiber where the Via Tiberina leads away from the Via Flaminia and another road led off along the Cremera to Veii .

Labaro

Labaro is a suburb of Rome located 11 kilometres north of its center along the Via Flaminia, just outside of the Grande Raccordo Anulare highway, and adiacent to Prima Porta. It has a population of c. 16,000.

Fidenae

Fidenae, or Fidenes, home of the Fidenates, was an ancient town of Latium, situated about 8 km north of Rome on the Via Salaria, which ran between Rome and the Tiber. As the Tiber was the border between Etruria and Latium, the left-bank settlement of Fidenae represented an extension of Etruscan presence into Latium.
