Battle of Troina

The Battle of Troina took place between 31 July and 6 August 1943, a part of the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II. Forces of the US II Corps, part of the US Seventh Army, engaged in fierce fighting around the town of Troina in the central portion of Sicily along the Caronie Mountains. The battle focused around the numerous hills and mountains surrounding Troina which the Germans had heavily fortified and used as bases for direct and indirect fire.

Nebrodi

The Nebrodi a mountain range that runs along the north east of Sicily. Together with the Madonie and the Peloritani, they form the Sicilian Apennines. The mountains run from the Peloritani on the eastern part of the island to the foothill of the Madonie mountains to the west, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north. Mount Etna, from which it is separated by the rivers Alcantara and Simeto, forms the range's southern border. The highest peak is the Monte Soro (1,817 m).

Lago Pozzillo

Lago Pozzillo is a lake in the Province of Enna, Sicily, southern Italy. Located in the Erean Mountains chain, it is the largest artificial basin in the island. The lake is located mostly in the comune of Regalbuto, but also partially in Agira. The lake was formed when a dam was built in 1959 at the north eastern end of the lake.
