Viareggio railway station

Viareggio railway station (Italian: Stazione di Viareggio) serves the city and comune of Viareggio, in the region of Tuscany, central Italy. Opened in 1936, it forms part of the Pisa–La Spezia–Genoa railway, and is also a junction for a secondary line to Lucca. The station is currently managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). Train services to and from the station are operated by Trenitalia.

Viareggio train derailment

The Viareggio derailment was the derailment of a freight train and subsequent fire which occurred on 29 June 2009 in the railway station of Viareggio, Tuscany. Twenty-six people were injured, and as of 22 December 2009 (2009-12-22), 32 people were confirmed as having died.

Sant'Anna di Stazzema

Sant'Anna di Stazzema is a village in Tuscany in central Italy. Administratively, it is a frazione of the comune of Stazzema, in the province of Lucca. In 1944, it was the site of a notorious Nazi atrocity during World War II. The village was only partially rebuilt after the war. Since 2000, it has been the site of the Italian National Park of Peace (Parco Nazionale della Pace) with memorials and a museum dedicated to the massacre.

Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre

The Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre was a Nazi German atrocity in the hill village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema, Italy, in the course of an operation against the Italian resistance movement during the Italian Campaign of World War II. On August 12, 1944, about 560 local villagers and refugees were murdered and their bodies burnt in a scorched earth policy action by the German occupation forces of the Waffen-SS.

Lago di Massaciuccoli

Lago di Massaciuccoli is a lake in the Province of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. Its surface area is 6.9 km². It is located mainly in the municipality of Massarosa and partly in Torre del Lago, a civil parish of Viareggio. The lake was known in ancient times as the Fossis Papirianis, a name used in the Tabula Peutingeriana. The composer Giacomo Puccini lived nearby and frequently hunted around the lake; the nearby village of Torre del Lago is sometimes mentioned with suffix "Puccini" in his honour.
