Three Mountains of Dewa

The Three Mountains of Dewa refer to the three sacred mountains of Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono, which are clustered together in the ancient province of Dewa. Holy to the Japanese Shinto religion and especially the mountain ascetic cult of Shugendo, Dewa Sanzan are a popular pilgrimage site visited by many, including famed haiku poet Matsuo Bashō. The Haguro Five-story Pagoda is a recognized national treasure of Japan.

Mount Haguro

Mount Haguro is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa, Japan. As the lowest of the three mountains, standing at 414 m, it is the only one that is accessible throughout the year. A path of 2,466 stone steps leads to its summit amidst 600-year-old sugi trees, past the famous Gojū-tō (五重塔) five story pagoda and numerous shrines. The steps and the pagoda are listed as National Treasures.

Saikan

Saikan (斎館, Saikan) is a sprawling temple lodging atop Mt. Haguro (羽黒山 Haguro-san), part of the Three Mountains of Dewa (出羽三山 Dewa Sanzan). It connects directly to the main temple of the complex through a long passageway that climbs further up the mountain. Elaborate Gohonbo Bassho-zen meals are served to visitors. Traditionally, it is reached by climbing up 2,466 stone steps up the side of the mountain, but it can also be reached by car or bus. \t\t \t\t\tSaikan2. jpg \t\t\t A simple breakfast.

Mount Yudono

Mount Yudono is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa. The Yudono-san Shrine, the most holy of the Dewa Sanzan shrines, is sited on the mountain. Pilgrims have to enter the shrine itself barefoot, and photography is not allowed. Due to heavy winter snowfall, the mountain and shrine are inaccessible for long periods of the year.
