Siaya District

Siaya District is one of the twelve districts that make up Nyanza Province in the southwest part of Kenya. It is bordered by Busia District to the North, Vihiga and Butere/Mumias Districts to the North-East, Bondo District to the South, and Kisumu District to the South-East. The total area of the district is approximately 1520 km². The District lies between latitude 0° 26’ to 0° 18’ north and longitude 33° 58’ east and 34° 33’ west. Siaya district has been split up into six new districts.

Urewe

The Urewe culture developed and spread in and around the Lake Victoria region of Africa during the African Iron Age. The culture's earliest dated artifacts are located in the Kagera Region of Tanzania, and it extended as far west as the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as far east as the Nyanza and Western provinces of Kenya, and north into Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Sites from the Urewe culture date from the Early Iron Age, from the 5th century BC to the 6th century AD.

Siaya

Siaya is a town in Nyanza Province of Kenya. It is the capital of Siaya District. It is located 74 kilometres Northwest of Kisumu, the provincial capital. Siaya forms municipal council with population of 41,174, of whom 13,787 are classified urban (1999 census). Siaya municipality has five wards: Mjini, Siaya Central, Siaya East, Siaya North and Siaya West. All of them are part of Alego Constituency. With the new constitution, it is now also in Siaya County of which it´s also its headquarter.

Suba District

Suba District is an administrative district in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Mbita Point. The district has a population of 155,666 and an area of 1,055 km² http://www. statoids. com/yke. html. Suba district is named after the Suba people, who inhabit local Rusinga and Mfangano Islands. The district has two constituencies: Mbita and Gwassi http://www. cdf. go. ke/Nyanza. htm. In line with the new Kenyan constitution, Suba district is now part of Homabay county.

Yala Swamp

The Yala Swamp is a wetland region of over 200 square km in Western Kenya. The wetland covers the North-Eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Siaya, Bondo and Busia districts in Kenya. It acts as a filter for waters that flow into Lake Victoria from two major rivers. Sometimes considered the source of the Nile. The swamps harbour endangered fish species Oreochromis esculentus and Oreochromis variabilis that have disappeared from Lake Victoria itself.
