Burtnieki is a village (population 488) in Burtnieki parish, North Latvia, near the Lake Burtnieks. Administrative center of Burtnieki municipality. Burtnieki was first mentioned in Indrikis chronicles in 1208 and has several historic sites: Burtnieki castle-ruins, Burtnieki manor and Burtnieki church.

Lake Burtnieks

Lake Burtnieks is the fourth largest lake in Latvia. It is shallow with an average depth of 2.9 m. The lake bed is mainly sandy, in places a little muddy. In the southeast part of the lake there is Devoniansandstone rock. The lake has 17 species of fish, such as minnows, salmon, chubs, eels, and pike, and there are areas for duck hunting. The banks are shallow and sandy, but along the southern coast, waves have carved sandstone cliffs.

Valmiera District

The Valmiera district was an administrative division of Latvia, located in the Vidzeme region, in the country's north-east. Its administrative center was Valmiera. It bordered Estonia to the north and the former districts of Limbaži to the west, Valka to the east and Cēsis to the south. It was the eight largest district in Latvia and had a population of 60,345 (2000 census). Districts were eliminated during the administrative-territorial reform in 2009.
