Rauna Castle

Rauna Castle ruins are located in the village of Rauna, in Cēsis District, Latvia. The castle was the principal residence of the Archbishopric of Riga in which at for certain period each year it was visited the Archbishop with his entourage. During the 16th century, it was greatly expanded and a settlement developed around the castle, and in the 17th century it was degraded, although the towers and parts of the castle remained.

Vidzeme

Vidzeme is one of the historical and cultural regions of Latvia. Literally meaning "the Middle Land" it is situated in north-central Latvia north of the Daugava River. Sometimes in German it is also known as Livland- German form from Latin Livonia, though it comprises only a small part of Medieval Livonia and about half (Latvian part) of Swedish Livonia. Vidzemes guberņa - Livland Governorate is also bigger than Vidzeme, since it corresponds roughly to Swedish Livonia.
