Winterswijk

' is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. Winterswijk (Winterswiek, Wenters) is a town with a population of some 30,000 in the Achterhoek which lies in the most eastern part of the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. It was also known as Winethereswick, Winriswic or Wenterswic. Wic or the Anglo Saxon wich means the living place of a certain person. The person would likely have been called Wenether, Winitar or Winter.

Stadtlohn-Vreden Airport

Stadtlohn-Vreden Airport is an airfield located 2.8 NM west of Stadtlohn, in the Borken district, Germany. Its runway lays adjacent to the Dutch border. The airfield is used for general aviation, as well for gliding and skydiving. Plans are made to extend the runway to 1,800 m but these plans are controversial. Local political parties disagree with each other whether growth is worthwhile the 8 million Euro investment.

Battle of Grolle

The Battle of Grolle is a regular historical reenactment of the siege of the fortified border town of Groenlo (formerly known as Grol or Grolle) in the Achterhoek in 1627 during the Dutch Revolt. It is held in and around Groenlo itself every two years. The event lasts for three days and features a historic battle reenactment and a historic fair, with reenactors from many European countries.

Siege of Groenlo (1672)

For other sieges of the town see Siege of Groenlo. The Siege of Groenlo was a 10-day siege of the Dutch town of Groenlo from 1 to 10 June 1672 by the combined forces of France, the Elector of Cologne and the Prince-Bishop of Münster during the Franco-Dutch War. It ended in the town's surrender.
