Midden-Zeeland Airport

Midden-Zeeland Airport, also known as Zeeland Airport, is an airport located 5 NM east northeast of Middelburg, Zeeland in the Netherlands, just south of the Veerse Meer lagoon. The airfield is uncontrolled and has a single grass runway of 1,000 m long in the 09/27 direction, with a displaced threshold of 200 m for the 09 direction. It was founded in 1968 and officially opened in 1970.

Battle of Walcheren Causeway

The Battle of Walcheren Causeway (Operation Vitality) was an engagement of the Battle of the Scheldt between the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade, elements of the British 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division, notably the Glasgow Highlanders, and troops of the German 15th Army in 1944. It was the first of many conflicts on and around Walcheren Island forming Operation Infatuate during the Scheldt battles.

Operation Infatuate

Operation Infatuate was the codename given to an Anglo-Canadian operation during the Second World War to open the port of Antwerp to shipping and relieve logistical constraints. The operation was part of the wider Battle of the Scheldt and involved two assault landings from the sea by the 4th Special Service Brigade and the 52nd (Lowland) Division. At the same time the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division would force a crossing of the Walcheren causeway.

Veerse Meer

The Veerse Meer (Lake Veere) is a lagoon in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands. It was separated from the North Sea in 1961 by the Delta Works dam system. It is 22 km long, and 1,500 m wide in places. Lying between the old islands of Noord-Beveland, Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren, it is linked to the river Scheldt by the Zandkreekdam lock, which allows this lagoon to have brackish water, slightly less salty than sea water. There are 13 small uninhabited islands in the lake.

Sloedam

The Sloedam is an old dam, connecting the Dutch islands Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren near the town of Arnemuiden. Before this dam was constructed, these islands were separated by a stretch of water called the Sloe. The Sloedam was constructed in 1871 during the laying of the railway between the towns of Vlissingen and Roosendaal, the Zeeuwse Lijn. After World War II, the areas to the south were poldered.
