Los Chiles (canton)

Los Chiles is the name of the 14th canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 1,358.86 square kilometres, and has a population of 21,523 (estimate as of 2003). The capital city of the canton is also called Los Chiles. The canton lies along the border of Nicaragua at the top of the Llanura de San Carlos (San Carlos Plain) in north central Costa Rica.

San Carlos, Río San Juan

San Carlos is the capital city of the municipality of San Carlos and of the Río San Juan Department of Nicaragua. The city proper has a population of roughly 12,174, while the city and surrounding communities (Comarcas) contain 37,461 as of 2005. San Carlos is positioned on the confluence of Lake Nicaragua and the San Juan River. The Solentiname Islands in Lake Nicaragua are part of the Municipality of San Carlos.

Río San Juan Department

Río San Juan is a department in Nicaragua. It was formed in 1957 from parts of Chontales and Zelaya departments. It covers an area of 7,473 km² and has a population of 95,500 (2005 census). The capital is San Carlos. The Department also includes the Solentiname Islands archipelago and the San Juan River, after which it is named. Trinidad, in Río San Juan, is the most southerly point in Nicaragua.

Solentiname Islands

The Solentiname Islands are an archipelago towards the southern end of Lake Nicaragua (also known as Lake Cocibolca) in the Nicaraguan department of Río San Juan. They are made up of four larger islands, each a few kilometres across, named, from west to east, Mancarroncito, Mancarrón, San Fernando and La Venada, along with some 32 smaller islands with rocky headlands which afford shelter to numerous aquatic birds. The islands’ origins are volcanic.
