Neelam Valley

Neelam Valley is located in Azad Kashmir Region. Neelam valley is a 144 km long bow-shaped deeply forested region in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Neelum Valley is situated at the North & North-East of Muzaffarabad, running parallel to Kaghan Valley. The two valleys are only separated by snow-covered peaks, some over 4000m above sea level.

Athmuqam

Athmuqam or Athmakam is a small city about 84 kilometres from Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It is the headquarters of Neelum District. Its population is about 20,000. The name Athmuqam means 8th station, derived from the number of stages from both Muzaffarabad and Kel to Athmuqam. A "nullah" divides Athmuqam into two parts Athai and Athmuqam. Athmuqam is in a cup like valley surrounded by mountains on all sides, full of greenery and forests with deodar, pine, cheer and fir trees.

2005 Kashmir earthquake

The 2005 Kashmir earthquake was a major earthquake centered in the Pakistan administered Kashmir near the city of Muzaffarabad, also affecting and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It occurred at 08:52:37 Pakistan Standard Time on 8 October 2005. It registered a moment magnitude of 7.6 making it similar in size to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the 1935 Quetta earthquake, the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, and the 2009 Sumatra earthquakes.

Neelum–Jhelum Hydropower Plant

The Neelum–Jhelum Hydropower Plant is part of an under construction run-of-the-river hydroelectric power scheme designed to divert water from the Neelum River to a power station on the Jhelum River. The power station is located in Azad Kashmir, 22 km south of Muzaffarabad and will have an installed capacity of 969 MW. Construction on the project began in 2008 after a Chinese consortium was awarded the construction contract in July 2007. The project is expected to be complete in 2016.

Karen Village

Karen Village is located in Kashmir. It is located in the Neelum Valley on the bank of the Neelum (or Kishanganga) river. This village is on the border between India and Pakistan. The largest part of the village is in the Kupwara district of Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir while the smaller part is in Pakistani-held Azad Kashmir. The river flowing through village acts as the border-line. While both sides have the same predominant religion, social and cultural practices differ greatly.
