Strait of Baltiysk

The Strait of Baltiysk is a strait in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, enabling passage from the Baltic Sea into the Vistula Lagoon. It separates the Sambian Peninsula and Vistula Spit. The strait is the main connection from the open sea to the important ports of Baltiysk and Kaliningrad in Russia, as well as to the Polish ports of Elbląg, Braniewo, Tolkmicko, Frombork, Sztutowo, Krynica Morska, and Nowa Pasłęka. The strait was dug in 1497.

Baltiysk (air base)

Baltiysk is a former air base in Kaliningrad Oblast at the north of Vistula Spit a natural cape, Russia located 5 km southwest of Baltiysk on the opposite site of natural outlet. Constructed in the 1930s by the German airforce, Soviet airforce took this place over after 1945 and it used to be Russia's westernmost air base. It has been deactivated in the 1990s and Google Earth imagery shows it to be in a severe state of decay. It appears to house a small number of interceptor alert pads.

ORP Wilk

ORP Wilk was the lead boat of her class of mine-laying submarines of the Polish Navy. The ship saw service in the Polish Navy from 1931 to 1951. Her name meant "Wolf" in Polish.

German submarine U-5 (1935)

German submarine U-5 was a Type IIA U-boat of the German Kriegsmarine. She was laid down on 11 February 1935, launched on 14 August and commissioned 31 August that year, under Oberleutnant zur See Rolf Dau. U-5 served mostly as a training boat from 1935 to 1940, but did see two wartime patrols in 1940. She was transferred to the 21st U-boat Flotilla on 1 July 1940. U-5 was sunk on 19 March 1943 in a diving accident west of Pillau (now Baltiysk in Russia); 16 of the 37-man crew survived.

Primorsk, Kaliningrad Oblast

Primorsk, prior to 1945 known by its German name Fischhausen, is an urban locality in Baltiysky District of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the Vistula Lagoon. Population: 1,956; 2,150; 1,792. Primorsk is one of the oldest settlements in the region. As Fischhausen it has been associated with the name of St.  Adalbert of Prague, supposedly beheaded nearby in 997 by the pagan Sambians after he destroyed their sacred oak grove. It became the seat of the Bishops of Sambia in 1243.
