Russian battleship Imperatritsa Ekaterina Velikaya

The Imperatritsa Ekaterina Velikaya (Russian: Императрица Екатерина Великая, or Empress Catherine the Great) was the second ship of the Imperatritsa Mariya-class dreadnoughts of the Imperial Russian Navy. She was begun before World War I, completed in 1915 and saw service with the Black Sea Fleet. She engaged the ex-German battlecruiser Yavuz once, but only inflicted splinter damage while taking no damage herself.

Tsemes Bay

The Tsemes Bay is an ice-free bay located on the northern coast of the Black Sea, in Krasnodar Krai of Russia. It takes its name from the Tsemes River which flows into the bay. The depth of the sea varies from 21 to 27 meters. The length of the bay is 15 kilometers; its maximum width is 9 kilometers. It is bordered by the Sudzhuk Spit and Cape Doob.

Abinsk

Abinsk, known as Abinsky (Аби́нский) before 1963, is a town and the administrative center of Abinsky District of Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located 75 kilometers southwest of Krasnodar. Population: 34,928; 33,734; 29,182; 23,000 (1968).

Markotkh Range

The Markotkh is a low 90 km-long mountain range in the extreme northwest of the Greater Caucasus that, running parallel to the Black Sea coastline, encircles the Tsemes Bay and the Gelendzhik Bay. Its Markotkh name translates from the Adyghe language as "blueberry". The highest point is Mount Ploskaya which has an elevation of 762 metres . The main Caucasus Range lies immediately to the north.

SS Admiral Nakhimov

The SS Admiral Nakhimov, launched in March 1925 and originally named SS Berlin III, was a passenger liner of the German Weimar Republic later converted to a hospital ship, then a Soviet passenger ship. On 31 August 1986, Admiral Nakhimov collided with the large bulk carrier Pyotr Vasev in the Tsemes Bay, near the port of Novorossiysk, Russian SFSR, and quickly sank. In total, 423 of the 1,234 people on board died.
