Priorat

Priorat is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. The central part of the comarca, "Priorat històric," produces the famous and prestigious wine of the Denominación de Origen Calificada Priorat. Wines from elsewhere in the comarca are denominated as Montsant. The area is also known for the production of hazelnuts. Priorat had a steady loss of population during the 20th century, but has recently as of 2004 experienced a more prosperous economy, resulting in an end to this trend.

Priorat (DOQ)

Priorat is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) (Denominació d'Origen Qualificada in Catalan) for wines produced in the Priorat county to the south-west of Catalonia The DOQ covers 11 municipalities. It primarily produces powerful red wines, which came to international attention in the 1990s. The area is characterised by its unique terroir of black slate and quartz soil known as llicorella.

Montsant DO

Montsant is a Spanish Denominación de Origen, DO for wine located in the province of Tarragona and covers 12 municipalities. It was previously known as the Falset subzone of Tarragona (DO), and was created as a separate DO in the early 2000s. Regional approval came in 2001, and from 2002 wines were sold as Montsant rather than Tarragona. Montsant takes its name from the Montsant mountains in the area. There are currently about 2,050 hectares of Montsant vineyards, with an increasing trend.
