Paviken

Paviken is a lake near Västergarn on western Gotland. The lake and its surroundings form the nature reserve Paviken. During the Viking Age, Paviken was a cove connected to the Baltic Sea. It formed a natural harbour which was improved by jetties. These were built during the 8th century and were used for about 300 years until the harbour became too shallow, when the harbour and trade was moved to Västergarn.

Lojsta Castle

Lojsta Castle (Lojsta slott) was, despite what the name suggests, not a "castle" in the normal sense, i.e. it was not a palacelike manor. It was more of a fortress. In the Middle Ages, Lojsta Castle was a defence-structure, placed on an island in a small lake in the middle of the Swedish island Gotland. The fortress is believed to have been used by the Vitalians who supported the captured Swedish king at the time, Albert of Mecklenburg.
