Mariastein Abbey

Mariastein Abbey (Kloster Mariastein) is a Benedictine monastery in Metzerlen-Mariastein in the Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. Mariastein, after Einsiedeln, is the second most important place of pilgrimage in Switzerland. Over the Chapel of Grace ("Gnadenkapelle") now stands a late Gothic three-aisled basilica. The interior is Baroque and the entrance facade classicist.

Château de Landskron

For the Pomeranian castle, see Veste Landskron. The Château de Landskron is situated in the southern part of Alsace, in the east of France, a few footsteps away from Switzerland, in the commune of Leymen. The village situated at the north of the ruin, Leymen, in the département of Haut-Rhin, lies in France while Flüh, at the south east foot of the ruin, is in Switzerland. The castle was built before 1297. Several disputes concerning the ownership have been reported.

Challhöchi Pass

Challhöchi Pass (el. 747 m. ) is a mountain pass in the Jura Mountains on the border of the cantons of Basel-Country and Solothurn in Switzerland. The pass road links Eptingen and Ifenthal or Hägendorf.

Laufen District

Laufen District or Laufental District (French: District de Laufon) is one of the five districts of the largely German-speaking canton of Basel-Country, Switzerland. Its capital is the town of Laufen. Prior to 1994 it was a district of the canton of Bern, one of the seven historical districts of the Bernese Jura. In 1979, three neighbouring French-speaking districts of Bern seceded to form the new canton of Jura.

1356 Basel earthquake

The Basel earthquake of 18 October 1356 is the most significant seismological event to have occurred in Central Europe in recorded history and may have had a Mw magnitude as strong as 7.1. The earthquake destroyed the town of Basel, Switzerland, sited near the southern end of the Upper Rhine Graben, and caused much destruction in a vast region extending into France and Germany.
