Battle of the Kasserine Pass

The Battle of the Kasserine Pass was a battle that took place during the Tunisia Campaign of World War II in February 1943. It was a series of battles fought around Kasserine Pass, a 2 mi wide gap in the Grand Dorsal chain of the Atlas Mountains in west central Tunisia. The Axis forces involved, led by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, were primarily from the Afrika Korps Assault Group, elements of the Italian Centauro Armoured Division and two Panzer divisions detached from the 5th Panzer Army.

Kasserine

Kasserine is the capital city of the Kasserine Governorate, in west-central Tunisia. It is situated below Jebel ech Chambi, Tunisia's highest mountain. Its population is 76,243 (2004). In classical antiquity it was a Roman colony known as Colonia Cillilana or plain Cillium.

Thelepte Airfield

Thelepte Airfield is an airfield in Tunisia, located about 20 km southwest of Kasserine. It currently is active and in use. It was used by the United States Army Air Force Twelfth Air Force in 1943 during the North African Campaign against the German Afrika Korps. The first American units arrived in late December and the P-40s of the 33d Fighter Group arrived on 7 January from Telergma Airfield, Algeria.

Thélepte

Thélepte is a Roman ruin in western Tunisia, 5 km from the modern town of Fériana, near the border with Algeria. It is located at around {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:34|58|33|N|8|35|38|E| | |name= }}. The best preserved building is a church. Cathedral in Thélepte, then Ruspe, was in the end of 5th and the beginning of 6th centuries a see of charismatic bishop Fulgentius of Ruspe, a Father of the Church. A once great city now stands little in ruins.
