Gallipoli

The Gallipoli peninsula is located in Turkish Thrace (or East Thrace), the European part of Turkey, with the Aegean Sea to the west and the Dardanelles straits to the east. Gallipoli derives its name from the Greek "Καλλίπολις" (Kallipolis), meaning "Beautiful City". In antiquity, it was known as the Thracian Chersonese. It is especially famous in Australia and New Zealand for the failed Allied offensive on Turkey in 1915 in World War I known as the Gallipoli Campaign.

Thracian Chersonese

The Thracian Chersonese (Greek: Θρᾳκικὴ Χερσόνησoς, Thrakike Khersonesos) was the ancient name of the Gallipoli peninsula, in the part of historic Thrace that is now part of modern Turkey. The peninsula runs in a south-westerly direction into the Aegean Sea, between the Hellespont (now known as the Dardanelles) and the bay of Melas (today Saros bay). Near Agora it was protected by a wall running across its full breadth.

Aegospotami

Aegospotami (Αἰγὸς Ποταμοί) or Aegospotamos (i.e. Goat Streams) is the ancient Greek name for a small river issuing into the Hellespont (Modern Turkish Çanakkale Boğazı), northeast of Sestos. At its mouth was the scene of the decisive battle in 405 BCE by which Lysander destroyed the Athenian fleet, ending the Peloponnesian War.
