Hakkâri Province

Hakkâri Province is a province in the south east corner of Turkey. The administrative centre is located in the city of Hakkâri. The province covers an area of 7,121 km² and has a population of 251,302 (2010 est). The province had a population of 236,581 in 2000. The province was created in 1936 out of part of Van Province. Its adjacent provinces are Şırnak to the west and Van to the north.

Massacres of Badr Khan

The Massacres of Bader Khan were a series of massacres carried out by the Kurdish Emirs of Buhtan and Hakkari Badr Khan and Noorallah, against the Assyrians of Hakkari and Tiyari in the 1840s. The massacres resulted in the killing of more than 10,000 Christians and the captivity of thousands of others. It also led to the Ottoman intervention, under Western pressure, to overthrow the last semi-independent Kurdish Emirates in 1847.

Konak, Hakkari

Modern Turkish name for a village in the province of Hakkari, traditionally called Qodchanis (Syriac: ܩܘܕܫܐܢܣ Qudshānes, also spelt Qudshanes, Kotchanes, Qochanis or Kocanis). It was the seat of the Assyrian bishops before 1915. The village is situated about 20 km northeast of the provincial capital Hakkâri of Hakkâri Province, in the southeastern corner of Turkey, near the borders of Iran and Iraq.
