Battle of Carrhae

The Battle of Carrhae was an important battle between the Parthian Empire and the Roman Republic: it was fought near the town of Carrhae, in 53 BC. The Parthian Spahbod ("general") Surena decisively defeated a Roman invasion force, led by Marcus Licinius Crassus. It was the first of the battles between the Roman and Persian empires, and one of the most crushing defeats in Roman history.

Şanlıurfa Airport

Şanlıurfa Airport is a closed airport in Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey. It is located 9 km south of the city of Şanlıurfa (commonly called "Urfa"). It was closed in 2007 after construction of the Şanlıurfa GAP Airport, about 34 km northeast of the city.

Göbekli Tepe

Göbekli Tepe ("Potbelly Hill") is a Neolithic hilltop sanctuary erected at the top of a mountain ridge in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, some 15 kilometers northeast of the town of Şanlıurfa (formerly Urfa / Edessa). It is the oldest known human-made religious structure. The site was most likely erected in the 10th millennium BCE and has been under excavation since 1994 by German and Turkish archaeologists.
