Geok Tepe

Geok Tepe, Gökdepe or Gokdepe, is a former fortress of the Turkmens, in Turkmenistan, in the oasis of Ahal, on the Transcaspian railway, 28 miles north-west of Ashgabat. Gökdepe is the Russian version of the Turkic name meaning "Blue Hill" from the Turkmen gök "blue" and depe "hill" or "summit". Today it lies along the M37 highway.

Abadan, Turkmenistan

Abadan is a town located near Aşgabat in the Ahal Province of Turkmenistan. It was founded in 1963. It was named Büzmeýin until October 2002 when its name was changed by Turkmenistan's president Saparmurat Niyazov. The traditional Russian name of the town is Bezmein (Безмейн). The town's current mayor, Orazmyrat Garajaýew, was one of the approved candidates for the 2007 presidential election. There are about 50000 people living in Abadan.

Karakum Canal

The Karakum Canal in Turkmenistan is one of the largest irrigation and water supply canals in the world. Started in 1954, and completed in 1988, it is navigable over much of its 1,375 km length, and carries 13 km³ of water annually from the Amu-Darya River across the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. The canal opened up huge new tracts of land to agriculture, especially to cotton monoculture heavily promoted by the Soviet Union, and supplying Ashgabat with a major source of water.
