Alhambra Shopping Centre

Alhambra Shopping Centre, also known by its former name The Mall Barnsley, is Barnsley's main shopping complex, housing 41 shops and adjacent to Barnsley Market. The centre was opened in 1991. A number of chains have been in the centre in the past, most notable was Woolworths which ceased trading in December 2008. It was owned and operated by The Mall Company, a large company that operates shopping centres throughout the UK until they sold it to TFC Reit in September 2011.

Dearne and Dove Canal

The Dearne and Dove Canal ran for almost ten miles through South Yorkshire, England from Swinton to Barnsley through nineteen locks, rising 127 feet . The canal also had two short branches, the Worsbrough branch and the Elsecar branch, both about two miles long with reservoirs at the head of each. The Elsecar branch also has another six locks. The only tunnel was bypassed by a cutting in 1840. The canal was created mainly to carry cargo from the extensive coal mining industry in the area.

Barnsley Town Hall

Barnsley Town Hall is the seat of local government in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. The Borough's local government was last reorganised in 1986 when the South Yorkshire County Council was abolished. The former County Council was located in offices on Kendray Street, the main part of which is due for demolition in 2007 or 2008 as part of a major redevelopment programme.

Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley

The Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley is a metropolitan borough of the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, England. Its main town is Barnsley. The borough is bisected by the M1 motorway; it is rural to the west, and largely urban/industrial to the east. 68% of Barnsley's 32,863 hectares is green belt and 9% is National Park land, the majority of which is West of the M1. In 2007 it was estimated that Barnsley had 224,600 residents, nine tenths of whom live east of the M1.
