Benfieldside

Benfieldside is a parish in County Durham, in England. Although not a village in its own right (ecclesiastically it incorporates Shotley Bridge, Bridgehill and much of Blackhill), it is signposted and locally known. The name 'Benfieldside' survives in Benfieldside Road, a school of that name, the local tennis club and the church. Knitsley

Knitsley is a hamlet in County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the south of the town of Consett. Local attractions include a pub (some way outside of the village) and a small post box. A telephone box once existed at the end of Hownsgill drive but this was removed many years ago due to lack of use. A railway station existed until 1964 when cutbacks in the railway system dramatically reduced rail services in Britain.

Leadgate, County Durham

Leadgate is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north-east of Consett. The Roman road Dere Street runs straight through the middle of Leadgate, today this is known as Durham Road and the B6309. The place-name 'Leadgate' is first attested in 1590 and derives from the Old English 'hlidgeat', which means 'swing-gate'. Leadgate was the home of the workers and staff of the Eden colliery which opened in 1844, and was closed on the 18 July 1980.
