Calton Hill, Derbyshire

Calton Hill is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Derbyshire, England, showing Olivine Diorite magma chamber. It is the site of an extinct volcano and the quarrying that has now been abandoned means that it is possible to observe the geological structures caused by the repeated eruptions. The eruptions were small and were then underwater as Derbyshire was covered by a sea in the Carboniferous period (around 330 million years ago).

White Peak

The White Peak is the lower, southern part of the Peak District in England. In contrast to the Dark Peak, the underlying limestone is not capped by impervious millstone grit, so caves and dry river valleys are common features of the area. The soils are poor and calcareous, creating grazing land for both sheep and cattle. Broadly speaking, the White Peak covers the Staffordshire Peaks, the Cheshire Peaks around Macclesfield and the Derbyshire Peaks from the Hope Valley southwards.
