River Wiske

The River Wiske is a river in the county of Yorkshire, England and is a tributary of the River Swale. The Wiske gives its name to several of the villages it passes through. The name Wiske is derived from an Old English word wisca meaning a water meadow. The river is maintained by the River Wiske Internal Drainage Board, which is part of the Shires Group of IDBs. It lies within the National Character Areas (NCA) of the Vale of Mowbray and the Tees Lowlands.

Great Smeaton

Great Smeaton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on elevated ground near the River Wiske, which is a tributary of the River Swale. The name Great Smeaton is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon word Smideton meaning the smiths farm. The A167 (Darlington Road) passes through the village, which is about halfway between Darlington and Northallerton. It once stood on the route of the Great North Road between London and Edinburgh.

Battle of the Standard

The Battle of the Standard, sometimes called the Battle of Northallerton, in which English forces repelled a Scottish army, took place on 22 August 1138 on Cowton Moor near Northallerton in Yorkshire. The Scottish forces were led by King David I of Scotland. The English were commanded by William of Aumale.

Kirby Sigston

Kirby Sigston is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England approximately four miles from Northallerton. The parish contains the hamlet of Jeater Houses due east of the village on the trunk A19 road. To the north is the site of Sigston Castle, a fourteenth century quadrangular castle, surrounded by a now largely dry moat.
