Carmarthen was one of six local government districts of the county of Dyfed, west Wales, from 1974 to 1996. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972 from the following parts of the administrative county of Carmarthenshire: The municipal borough of Carmarthen The urban district of Newcastle Emlyn The rural districts of Carmarthen and Newcastle Emlyn In 1996 the district was abolished under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.

Ysgol y Gwendraeth

Ysgol Y Gwendraeth is an age 11 years - 18 years secondary school or comprehensive school in the heart of the Gwendraeth Valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The school is situated in the village of Drefach and has 312 pupils (2012). The current headteacher is Mrs Anna Williams. The school promotes the Welsh language, Welsh history and Welsh culture. Some subjects are available to be taught in the Welsh language if requested, otherwise the lessons are taught in the English language only.

Paxton's Tower is a Neo-Gothic folly erected in honour of Lord Nelson. It is situated on a hilltop near Llanarthney in the Towy Valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales.
