Catalina Flyer

The Catalina Flyer is a 500 passenger catamaran ferry operated by Catalina Passenger Service. It has provided daily passenger service since 1988 from the Balboa Pavilion in Newport Beach, California to the city of Avalon located on Santa Catalina Island. Prior to 1988, the same run was served by the Island Holiday from the mid-1950s until 1978, and the Catalina Holiday from 1978 until 1988, both also operated by Catalina Passenger Service.

Lovers Cove State Marine Conservation Area and Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area

Lovers Cove State Marine Conservation Area and Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area (SMCAs) are two nearby marine protected areas that include offshore, island marine habitat on opposite sides of Avalon Harbor, Catalina Island, off California’s south coast. The SMCAs cover .06 and .01 square miles respectively. These SMCAs function essentially as dive areas in this popular diving and water sports area.

Toyon Bay

Toyon Bay is located on Catalina Island off the coast of California. Originally inhabited by a group of natives called Pipi Mari (or Pimugnans), and the Torqua, after whom a nearby spring is named. In the early 1900s, it was the site of a boys' boarding school. During World War II, the boys were evacuated and the facility was turned into an Office of Strategic Services training camp. Chinese and American men were trained in guerrilla warfare for use behind Japanese lines in China.
