Originally a small crossroads in a rural area south of Wilmington, the area supported small farms growing mainly corn and cattle. It connects the waters of the Delaware River with those of the Chesapeake Bay (the mouth of the Susquehanna River) and the Port of Baltimore. The C&D Canal is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District.
